An insistence on re-examining the past, and an attention to the ways it shapes the present, run through the works presented in this programme. While the eponymous tower in Salomé Jashi’s film becomes a place of rumination on lives lost to occupation, Newsreel 242 - Sunny Railways uses archival photography to invoke the history of socialist youth work in Yugoslavia and to reflect on contemporary nation-states’ migration policies. Morgenkreis traces the reality of exile, showing how life, from early on, can be entangled in state violence and survival. Gestures of care and solidarity become acts of resistance, and human connections offer a counter to rigid institutional rules. In Postscript, too, it is through a phone conversation with an Iranian archivist that the filmmakers speculate on histories that have been erased or concealed.
